Another Reason to Abolish the Filibuster

May 23, 2011

Goodwin Liu’s failed nomination also presents another demonstration of the undemocratic effect of the filibuster – especially when used by Republicans – which I’ve written about before. According to my calculations, the senators voting against cloture and thereby preventing Liu from receiving an up-or-down vote represent approximately 110mil people while the senators voting in favor of cloture represent 162mil people (five senators representing 36mil people either did not vote or voted present). Doesn’t seem fair, does it?
