An Act of God, If Dick Cheney Were Divine

May 3, 2010

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a habit of not paying attention to reality, as when he called George W. Bush “an incredibly good president.” More recently, he cautioned against “knee-jerk reactions” to the oil spill saying:

“From time to time there are going to be things that occur that are acts of God that cannot be prevented.”

Except, well, in this case, we know that more could have been done to prevent the spill. The Deep Horizon well could have been outfitted with a remote shut-off switch. The switches were found too burdensome by, suprise, Dick Cheney’s secret energy task force. More could have been done to prevent this spill.

On the other hand, the Deep Horizon rig was a state-of-the-art rig in 2001. If this spill really couldn’t have been prevented, maybe we shouldn’t be drilling for oil, right? Maybe the current catastrophe shows us that offshore rigs simply aren’t worth it. If a certain mountain hurt a bunch of people with avalanches, the individual injuries could be called acts of God. But someone who got hurt climbing the mountain after knowing of the other injuries would have no right to blame it on God (or Dick Cheney). They would be called stupid for trying to climb such a dangerous mountain. Let’s not make the same mistake with oil drilling.
