A History Lesson for Texas Gov. Perry

April 21, 2010

This week, as part of a “Don’t Mess With Texas” issue, Newsweek published this interview with Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, a prominent national Republican politician, though he has said emphatically that he will not run for president in 2012. Previously, he’s contemplated the secession of Texas. In the interview, he takes a swing at the New Deal and unleashes the similarly gargantuan piece of historical revisionism:

But here is why he was an incredibly good president: because the man kept America safe.

I beg your pardon, Gov. Perry, but have you not forgotten that he failed to prevent the worst terrorist attack in American history? Wikipedia has an extensive article on it. Bush did keep us safe for the seven subsequent years, at the questionable cost of more than 5,000 U.S. lives. However, to say that Mr. Bush kept us safe is historical amnesia of the worst kind.
