A Correction from Repair California

October 14, 2009

I’ve received another e-mail from the Repair California team, saying that they were in fact mistaken in telling me that their constitutional convention proposal would select delegates via local appointment, making my previous post incorrect. In fact, they are still deliberating as to which method they will use to select delegates and the random selection model is still being considered; the final ballot language is expected very soon. I should reiterate that, while the random selection model would be my preference, I would still support a proposal that would call for the appointment of delegates by local nonpartisan officials. I am highly dubious of any direct election method, as any election would immediately open itself to meddling by moneyed interests. Now, on the other hand, publicly-financed elections… but, of course, this is America.
