Kindergarten Cop?

October 9, 2009

I’ve been busy and haven’t had a chance to comment on Schwarznegger’s blanket veto threat. You can read about it in the SacBee but to summarize the Governator is threatening to veto every bill the Legislature passed at the end of the summer if they don’t reach a compromise on water legislation before Sunday at midnight when he has to sign the bills.

The water issue is extremely complicated – so much so that I still am having trouble wrapping my head around the various elements that need to be addressed – and it’s clear that there’s many urgent issues that need to be addressed. But to hold the rest of this legislative year hostage to pass a water bill is just ridiculous. Here’s the thing: the Governor must know that. A veto of the 700+ bills would make him appear obstructionist. He’d look like he didn’t have the state’s best interest in mind. Of course, there are many people who would benefit from a water bill and it would enhance the Governor’s legacy but the veto would effectively destroy is legacy. I say he’s bluffing. As for the substantive issues of the water bill, give me a while more to figure that all out.
