Field Poll – Oct. 8/9

October 9, 2009

New numbers (Senate; Governor – PDF) are out from the Field Poll for both the gubernatorial and senate races. Barbara Boxer holds double digit leads over both former HP exec Carly Fiorina and Assemblyman Chuck DeVore so no surprises there. I don’t expect this race to get too competitive.

On the gubernatorial race, things are looking better for Newsom, although still relatively dire. According to this poll, he leads every Republican candidate by 5-9%. Brown, on the other hand, leads every Republican candidate by more than 20 points. John Wildermuth at Fox & Hounds says it’s time for Newsom to get nasty (alliteration!) and I’d have to agree. There’s a bevy of talking points he could use against Brown, most recently his campaign fundraiser for Republican and San Bernadino County DA Mike Ramos. There’s a good deal of time left in the race but Brown’s lead is to big to be eliminated by chipping away. Newsom needs a game-changer.
