Packer on Holbrooke

October 6, 2009

I just read this wonderful profilfe of Richard Holbrooke  by the extraordinary foreign affairs correspondent George Packer. The piece does a great job weaving together Holbrooke’s personality and working style with wider discussion of the maddening and tragic complexities of the conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and does so in an imminently readable fashion. The problems and questions confronting the American public in Central Asia are, whether we acknowledge it or not, potentially unsolvable and unanswerable. Unfortunately, the piece is still behind the firewall but I’ll make it known when it’s out.

Update: The piece is now live.
