Death Penalty Repeal Initiative Qualifies

In other criminal justice news, the initiative to replace the death penalty with life-without-parole has qualified for the November ballot. According to a September 2011 poll by the Field Poll, Californians support the death penalty in the abstract 68%-27%, despite an erosion of that support in recent years. However, the same poll showed Californians supporting life-without-parole over the death penalty 48%-40% so the initiative definitely has a chance. I’ve written before about the death penalty, so I’ll just link to that instead of writing it over again here. I’ll be keeping track of the initiative as the election draws closer.
